13th August 2025 Daily Video Game Gossip

As you may have noticed, we've added a new source to the feeds; 80 Level (or, “80lvl”). Vice's Waypoint has also been added, but Polygon has been removed for the time being because we were getting a 520 error.

Our Thoughts

Kit-bashing

From what I can tell, this looks a lot like how a concept artist acquaintance of ours described their process. I never got to sit and watch them while they were working, but from what I can tell, this is a process similar to what they would have done when they were working for Ubisoft. We don't know how relevant this particular workflow is for work in the industry today, but it's certainly useful for hobbyists.

How-To: PS1 Style Graphics

Just the other day we shared an article that was written about a tweet that Koji Sugimoto made complaining about indie devs replicating PS1-style graphics, and here's another tutorial on how to do it. The reality is that 32 and 64-bit early 3D is en vogue right now.

Isometric RPG Sale

We were actually kind of disappointed that most of the games for sale are ones that we already own, but now is as good a time as any to add them to your collection.

New Kind of Aim Assist

We agree, this is not cheating... So long as no one tries to use it in a tournament setting. However, we imagine it might be useful for training purposes.

Traditional Console Multiplayer

This is a bit of a shame, only because we primarily game on Xbox or Steam, while most of our friends have PS5s. Guess we'll just have to wait for reviews when the releases later this month.

Modern Video Game Industry

This was a wonderful article, but we disagree with some of Layden's assertions. One in particular concerning ancillary or adjacent markets. He states that:

“The problem with gaming is all we have is launch. That's it. No one wants to pay money to come into the studio and watch people code.”

Completely ignoring the massive success that programmers and devs have had on Twitch and YouTube simply streaming themselves working on project. So, YES, people do want to want to pay money and watch people code. It's clear that the problem is not the launch of a game, it's the development time and the money it takes to float a studio for a decade while they work on something that may not be received well by a mainstream audience.

Gamescom

Now that E3 is gone, all that the US has is Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest. However, Geoff is still involved with his Opening Night Live broadcast which kicks off the convention. We're expecting there might be some relatively big reveals, so this is an event to keep your eye on.
